From the 15th to the 28th of February 2026, the Africa for SDGs Homa Bay Hub became a hive of innovation, strategy, and collaboration. We were proud to host the Africa for SDGs Cohort 13 Fellowship, a two-week residential intensive that brought together 16 exceptional youth leaders from Kenya and Uganda.

Our goal was simple but ambitious: to transition these leaders from learners to implementers, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and on-the-ground sustainable development.

The Fellowship Journey
The cohort represented a diverse range of perspectives, but all shared a common drive to tackle regional sustainability gaps. Over 14 days, the curriculum moved beyond traditional lectures, focusing on “Systems Thinking”—the ability to see the bigger picture of how policies, climate, and community dynamics interact.

Key pillars of our training included:
- Systems Thinking & Complexity: Mapping out feedback loops to solve root causes rather than just symptoms.
- SDG Implementation: Aligning localized projects with the global agenda.
- Evidence-Based Impact: Designing Theory of Change models and robust Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) frameworks.
- Innovation Pitching: Developing scalable solutions to community problems.

Highlights from the Field
It wasn’t just about the classroom. We integrated cultural bonding and active community engagement to ground our leadership training in reality:
- The Debate: A fierce but friendly competition on “Policy Reforms vs. Community Action” highlighted the need for both top-down structural change and bottom-up grassroots mobilization.
- The SDG Picnic: We collaborated with the Tom Mboya SDGs Chapter, creating a space for cross-generational dialogue and peer-learning.
- Innovation Pitching: A massive congratulations to Group 5, who took home the win with their innovative mobile application designed to enhance community problem reporting and real-time SDG tracking.
- Campus Connect: We strengthened our ecosystem by connecting with SDG chapters from 7 universities, including the University of Nairobi (Lower Kabete), Rongo University, KCA University, and others.

Impact & Looking Forward
The fellowship concluded with 16 concrete SDG Action Plans, each with a clear implementation timeline. We aren’t just sending 16 fellows home with certificates; we are sending them back with actionable roadmaps.
Our Monitoring & Evaluation framework is now live, and we look forward to tracking the transformation these leaders will spearhead in their respective communities over the coming months.

To our Fellows: The work truly begins now. We are excited to see these Action Plans come to life.
